During the Fall Halloween season, Laurel's House of Horror and Escape Room is usually open each Friday, Saturday and Sunday through mid-October, and even more dates in late October, with an additional two dates in early November. Built inside of an abandoned movie theater -- Laurel's House of Horror is Maryland, DC and Virginia's largest indoor and scariest haunted house attraction. Throughout the course of ABC News' reporting, Vanessa Espinoza's name came up over and over.

But some officials and some of the Turpin children are now speaking out to say they still do not have access to many of the resources and services guaranteed to them. An ABC News investigation has found the some of the Turpin children continue to face challenges and hardships since they were rescued and placed in the care of the county. While it is unclear of any paranormal activity happening at the site of one of the most gruesome homicides in Los Angeles history, some have told stories of the possibility of John Holmes’s ghost still hanging around the house. However, the spirits of the occupants who had been savagely murdered on that July night may also still be out and about. The home at one point was up for rent for the price of $3,000 a month.

"In addition, the examination will review the various departmental programs to assess the level of care, attention and services provided to children and dependent adults under the programs' care and supervision,'' Van Wagenen said. "Have there been other issues that have come to light in the many foster care homes in which the minor Turpin children have been placed?" Scott asked Donaldson. "I requested -- I called the public guardian's office and she refused to let me request for a bike," Joshua Turpin said, referring to the public guardian's office. "And I contacted my attorney, Jack Osborn, and he refused to let me know who was over charge of my trust." State law mandates confidentiality on all juvenile court proceedings, effectively shielding the records of the minor Turpin children. But in the probate court overseeing the adult Turpin children's cases, a blanket sealing order has been issued as well-- an unusual move enacted right after the children were rescued in order to protect them from the onslaught of media coverage.
Recent court filings show the court-appointed public guardian failed to file the annual accounting for the trust, leaving the family's finances opaque. Much of the $600,000 in private donations has been kept from the siblings. County officials, citing court-ordered secrecy, have refused to provide ABC News with any information about the trusts, including how much money has been distributed to the Turpin children and the justification for refusing some requests for financial assistance made on behalf of the children. "They have been victimized again by the system," Mike Hestrin, the Riverside County district attorney, told ABC News' Diane Sawyer in an interview for the 20/20 special event, "Escape From A House Of Horror." Melissa Donaldson, the county's director of victim services, told the network the children "felt betrayed'' by the county.

Chang said he "welcome[s] an independent and comprehensive inquiry into the care, services, and placement provided to the 13 Turpin siblings by Riverside County departments." One of the siblings, 29-year-old Joshua Turpin, said he struggled to access funds for needs as simple as day-to-day transportation. Reports detailing the children's well-being, records accounting for the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised by strangers, and other documents in the court filing remain sealed.
The report is expected to be presented to the county by March 31, and it will "serve as the foundation for action to implement policy and program reforms within Riverside County, as necessary,'' he said. "Well I am not -- I don't have the information you're looking for," Spiegel told ABC News. "We're still in investigation stages, so I don't have anything to share with you."
While there probably had been tenants coming in and out, it’s unknown at this point whether they can confirm if the place was indeed haunted. But there is no doubt that for those who may have known the story, they cannot help but get an eerie feeling each time they enter the house. ABC reported some of the siblings have no meaningful access to basic needs such as health care, transportation, food or safe housing.
Just four days after ABC News requested from the court an explanation for the sealing order, Judge Cahraman unsealed a few of the filings partially explaining the secrecy in the case. The newly available documents shed no light on the Turpins' care or lives since they were rescued, but the unsealing did mark a first for the case. "That is unimaginable to me -- that we could have the very worst case of child abuse that I've ever seen," Hestrin said, "and then that we would then not be able to get it together to give them basic needs." For Hestrin and advocates for the children, their treatment has been unacceptable -- a tragedy that both shocks and compounds the horrors of their prior life.
"Really what we've seen in the cases that we've looked at is, unless you have a child who dies or a child who ends up pregnant as a result of sexual abuse, then nothing happens," Booth said. The head of the county's Public Guardian office, Dr. Matthew Chang, lauded his office's work in a statement to ABC News, saying he "stand[s] by the exceptional work provided within the Public Guardian Program." When ABC News attempted to meet up with her last week, she avoided cameras. The next morning, a county spokeswoman said Espinoza had not worked there since Aug. 21, declining to say anything more because of both personnel-confidentiality rules and the court's order of secrecy in the Turpin cases.
Two of the older children have at times had to resort to "couch-surfing," one advocate said, and, in at least one case, another was assaulted. It was Hestrin, as Riverside's district attorney, who prosecuted the Turpins' parents, David and Louise. They are now serving life sentences in separate California penitentiaries. "When I try to have access [to the money], I have difficulty," Joshua said. Unfortunately for the Turpin children, who ranged in age from 2 to 29, those promises have fallen flat.
Riverside County District Attorney Mike Hestrin told ABC some of the adult children are "living in squalor'' or in "crime-ridden neighborhoods,'' unable to access money that was raised on their behalf after their rescue. The Turpin children have been relocated several times, according to county officials working on the case and the children themselves. One foster family now faces criminal charges in connection with their alleged mistreatment of several of their foster children, including one of the Turpin minors. "I don't really have a way to get food right now," Jordan Turpin, 21, told ABC News' Diane Sawyer when they met in July. At the time, Jordan had just been released -- she says without warning -- from extended foster care with no plan for food, health care, life skills training, or even shelter. After their rescue, some of the younger siblings spent years in foster homes where there were accusations of child abuse -- including an accusation that at least one of the Turpins was a victim of such abuse, for which charges have been filed.

The film itself didn’t have a scene that was based on the Wonderland Murders, but there was once a scene that was loosely based on the robbery of Nash.

They reverted their decision less than a day later after receiving widespread backlash and instead advised against…well, most Halloween festivities. Prior to his passing, the LAPD was still investigating the murders long after the trial of Holmes had ended. Detectives were questioning Holmes about what happened, with the latter giving little to no information about the incident. Employees of the VA hospital where Holmes lived out his last days recalled seeing Holmes give incoherent answers or not even responding to the questions at all due to the severity of his illness. In his last days, it was reported that Holmes no longer wanted to cooperate with authorities regarding the murders.
The move follows reports by ABC News in which some of the siblings said they were living in poor surroundings and unable to access basic services or money that had been raised for them through private donations -- allegations backed up by county District Attorney Mike Hestrin. Donaldson, through tears, explained that basic needs remain elusive, and the kids continue to struggle to navigate a complex and bureaucratic system they have no experience with, despite a global outpouring of support. She said the county dismissed inquires from numerous health care professionals offering free services for as long as the Turpins needed them. "They're living in squalor," Hestrin said, referring to some of the adult children. "They're living in crime-ridden neighborhoods. There's money for their education -- they can't access it," Hestrin said.
According to public records reviewed by ABC News, ChildNet has in recent years been the subject of dozens of investigations into allegations of verbal and physical abuse in its foster homes -- many of which have been substantiated by state investigators. "You rarely hear folks like you speaking out publicly about your work. This is the exception," ABC News correspondent David Scott told Donaldson as she explained what the last four years have been like for the Turpin children. "Did we see kids having to not have a safe place to live or stay at times? Yes. Did they have enough food at times? They did not," Donaldson said. "They had to go to churches and eat because they didn't know how to manage money ... and some without housing at times." But advocates and several of the Turpins themselves have come forward to share troubling tales of their plight.
The Turpin siblings ranged in age from 2 to 29 when they were rescued from the home of their parents, David Allen Turpin and Louise Ann Turpin, who are both now serving 25 years to life in prison for imprisoning and torturing 12 of their 13 children in what was described as a house of horrors. As the adult children struggled under county guardianship, some of their seven younger siblings faced new hardships in the foster care system and the California-based agency contracted to run it by the county. A major challenge for the Turpins has been accessing the state and county social service programs they were entitled to, as well as the donations that came in following their parents' arrest. Most of the funds have gone into a trust that is controlled by a court-appointed public guardian, but details about the guardian -- and the money -- are hard to come by. What’s the best season to cruise to Hawaii?
Also remember that one-way airfares can be expensive if you're looking at a repositioning sailing. May and September can also be great times to cruise Alaska if you'd like to save a little money. Whale watching is good in both months, as gray and humpback whales migrate to and from the state. Other wildlife will also start to emerge from their winter slumbers in May or be in the middle of mating season in September. Princess is the only line offering a full season of round trip cruises to Hawaii from Los Angeles and San Francisco.

What to Pack for a Hawaii Cruise
Cruise ships dock there, but you'll need to take a tour or other transportation to see the sights. You can plop down in the sand on beautifully manicured strands of white sand or find more rugged volcanic black sand beaches. Look for beach parks with sheltered swimming areas for families or find a secluded beach away from popular tourist areas. Some beaches can have strong currents or rough seas during certain times of the year, so always exercise caution when swimming. Seabourn, Silversea and Oceania offer upscale accommodations, fine dining and multiple fare inclusions for travelers looking to journey in style across the Pacific Ocean, stopping in Hawaii along the way.

That doesn't mean, however, that you can just head to a resort, select a lounger and act like you're a guest. Instead, there are public access points for popular resort beaches, such as Wailea and Kaanapali on Maui, Waikiki on Oahu and Poipu on Kauai. You'll be able to stake a spot on the sand, generally to either side of a resort's beach chairs — so bring along beach towels and/or pareos as well as water and snacks. On Kauai, there are multiple national rental car agencies at Lihue Airport (LIH), which is a five-minute drive (by taxi or Uber) from the port at Nawiliwili Harbor.
Whether your itinerary takes you to the cliffs of Kauai or the beaches of Maui, there’s no bad time of year to sail to Hawaii. The winter months -- especially during the Christmas holiday season, from late December through the first week of January -- are the most popular times to visit Hawaii. This is the best time of the year for whale-watching (whale season is November through early May), but it's also when the weather is the rainiest and flights are most expensive. Summer is a popular time for family travel, though only Norwegian is offering cruises at that time.
With departures available on Saturdays year-round, cruisers can easily find a sailing date that fits their schedule. The ship’s 2,186 passengers can choose shore excursions on every island or simply relax on board while cruising between destinations. The best time to visit for island festivals and events depends on what you're looking for during your visit. 'Merrie Monarch,' also known as the Olympics of Hula, is held in Hilo on the Big Island every April. Over on Oahu, you can catch the 'Waikiki Spam Jam,' also usually held in April.

May and late-October Canada and New England cruises are the cheapest times to cruise, but don't expect to be using the onboard swimming pool much. While Australia's weather varies, winter temperatures between June and early September are rarely as extreme in North America. Crowds are fewer, and there are bargains to be had, especially on larger ships and Great Barrier Reef cruises that are available year-round. Escape the summer crowds in Hawaii by scheduling your family cruise vacation for May, right before the school year concludes.
Expect larger crowds as well as higher cruise fares and hotel rates if you travel during these periods. On the other hand, compared with a weeklong, land-based visit to just one or two islands, you might find yourself hard-pressed to fit in everything you want to do in each port of call. You need to make sure your cruise ship and itinerary help you reach your vacation goals — not hinder them. Many visit Hawaii hoping to see a whale, monk seal, or green sea turtle.
Low season is the cheapest season -- and least busy -- but may mean sacrifices in what you can see and possible cancellations due to weather. Because of school summer break, June, July, and August can get upwards of 1 million visitors, making this one of the worst times to travel. This is likely due to school breaks again, as many people travel during spring break and the holiday season. Of course, the exact temperatures and weather conditions vary between islands and even which side of the island you’re docked on! For example, the leeward side of the islands has less rain and more sunny days compared to the windward side.
